Why HAN is good value

HAN combines low fees with a strong scholarship. Most Dutch scholarships are one-off payments; HAN's version for bachelor's students continues after the first year if you keep up your study progress. HAN is a university of applied sciences, so programs are practical, with projects and work placements, and entry is based on a HAVO/VWO-equivalent school diploma.

The 2027/28 amounts were not yet published in October 2026. For Molecular Biosciences, years 3 and 4 are spent at the University of Dundee, and you pay Dundee for those years. Students who already hold a Dutch bachelor's or master's pay the non-EU rate.

Living costs

HAN puts living costs at about €1,200 a month in Arnhem and Nijmegen and estimates the total annual cost for non-EU students at more than €20,000. Non-EU students go through a financial check. See our cost of studying in the Netherlands guide.

English-taught programs at HAN

Bachelor's (4 years)

  • Engineering: Automotive Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Embedded Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering
  • Science: Chemistry, Life Sciences, Molecular Biosciences (joint degree with the University of Dundee)
  • Business and people: International Business, Communication, Social Work

  • Applied Molecular Sciences – Chemistry or Molecular Life Sciences (2 years)
  • Engineering Systems – Automotive Systems, Cyber-Physical Systems or Sustainable Energy (1.5 years)
  • Circular Economy (1 year) and International Social Work (1 year)

Part-time means no visa

Applied Data Science is a part-time master's only, so it does not qualify for a student visa. Choose a full-time program if you need a residence permit.

Admission requirements

Bachelor's

You need a secondary-school certificate equivalent to Dutch HAVO or VWO, with good grades in program subjects. Engineering needs English, physics and mathematics; Chemistry, Life Sciences and Molecular Biosciences need chemistry and mathematics; International Business needs good mathematics grades; Communication and Social Work have no subject requirements. A short online matching interview is compulsory.

English: IELTS Academic 6.0 (no sub-score below 5.0, speaking 6.0), TOEFL iBT 4.5 on the new scale, Cambridge FCE 169+, LanguageCert 65 or PTE 61. Home editions are not accepted and results may be at most 2 years old.

Master's

You need a relevant bachelor's. Engineering Systems asks for an average of at least 70% or a GPA of 2.8/4.0 and IELTS 6.0 with all sub-scores at 6.0. Applied Molecular Sciences, International Social Work and Circular Economy ask for IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 5.0 on the new scale (90 on the old scale). Applied Molecular Sciences also needs an internship position.

The February 2027 deadline (1 October 2026) has passed. For Molecular Life Sciences, the program page says 1 May and the deadlines page says no later than 1 June without an approved internship, so confirm with HAN.

HAN scholarships

  • HAN NL Scholarship (bachelor's): €5,000 in year one, then €2,500 a year for three years if you earn 45 credits each year.
  • HAN NL Scholarship (master's): up to €5,000.
  • Condition: you must be admitted before 1 April (September start) or 1 October (February start) to be considered.
  • Honors Scholarship: available after year one.

Because admission must come before 1 April, apply in the autumn or winter, not at the 1 May deadline. Compare national options in our scholarships in the Netherlands guide.

Living in Arnhem and Nijmegen

HAN has campuses in both Arnhem and Nijmegen, so check where your program is taught. HAN's own estimate of about €1,200 a month for living costs fits within the national range Study in NL gives (€1,000–€1,500 a month). Housing is scarce across the Netherlands: start looking as soon as you are admitted, ask HAN first, and never pay brokerage fees or pay for a room you have not seen.

After you arrive, register with your municipality (BRP) to get your citizen service number (BSN), which you need for a bank account and a job. You may work up to 16 hours a week, or full-time in June, July and August, once your employer has a work permit (TWV) for you. Program internships do not need a TWV.
