Admission and language requirements

  • Degree: an academic bachelor's in a relevant field; each program sets its own rules. Energy Engineering Technology, for example, asks for an honours bachelor in an energy-related domain.
  • English: IELTS Academic 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 89 for most programs; TOEFL 79 is accepted for Transportation Sciences and Energy Engineering Technology; Duolingo 120 for some programs; Cambridge C1 Advanced.
  • Exemption: a degree fully taught in English, proved with a medium-of-instruction attestation, exempts you for most programs.
  • Extra steps: a GRE General Test is recommended for Statistics and Data Science; Biomedical Sciences has an online test after a positive evaluation; Interior Architecture needs a portfolio.
  • Documents: ID or passport, CV, motivation letter, all diplomas and transcripts, official translations if not in English, French, Dutch or German, and your English certificate.

Two mandatory steps

Applying means (1) an online application in the UHasselt student portal and (2) verification of all your higher-education diplomas and transcripts, at your own cost. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee admission.

Deadlines for 2027/28

Scholarships

  • Master Mind Scholarship: GPA of at least 3.5/4 and IELTS 7 or TOEFL 94. You must already be admitted, so apply for admission by 1 February; the scholarship deadline is 15 March. Holders pay €139.40 tuition. The Flemish government says the 2027/28 modalities are under review.
  • VLIR-UOS ICP scholarships: for nationals of listed countries, deadline 1 February. Afghanistan is not on the list.

More options are in our scholarships in Belgium guide.

Living costs

Study in Flanders estimates student living costs at €800 to €1,000 per month, with rent of €450 to €600. For the visa you must prove at least €1,062 net per month for 2026/27. With a residence permit you may work up to 20 hours a week during term.

Who UHasselt suits best

UHasselt is a good match if your background is in statistics, mathematics, biology, health, transport, business or architecture and you want a master's in English for a modest fee. On UHasselt's fee page, Statistics and Data Science and Biomedical Sciences are listed under the transnational University Limburg (tUL), a cooperation framework, but they sit in the same €3,900 category as the other programs.

  • Good fit: data and health applicants who want a 2-year, 120-ECTS master at €3,900 per year.
  • Good fit: applicants who missed earlier deadlines elsewhere, thanks to the 1 April and 1 May dates.
  • Think twice: if you need an engineering degree at the lowest price, because Energy Engineering Technology is in the most expensive category.
  • Think twice: if you want a bachelor's, because UHasselt teaches none in English.

Honest downsides
