Admission requirements for master's
- Degree: a relevant bachelor's of at least 180 ECTS. There is no minimum grade, but you are not admissible if the subject gaps exceed 30 ECTS. Smaller gaps can be imposed as extra exams.
- English B2: IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 87, or Cambridge B2 First / C1 Advanced with 160 or more (certificates valid two years). A three-year English-taught degree from the EU/EEA, Switzerland, UK, US, Canada, Australia or New Zealand also counts.
- Documents: signed application form, legalised copy of your bachelor's diploma with official translation, diploma supplement or transcript showing ECTS and contact hours, English certificate, passport copy.
- Selection procedure only for Building Science and Environment, Green Chemistry and Digital Civil Engineering Science.
- Limit: a maximum of two applications per person.
Doctoral programs
TU Wien has three doctoral programs: engineering, natural sciences, and social and economic sciences, each at least six semesters and 180 ECTS. You need a relevant master's or diploma degree and, before applying, a written confirmation of supervision from a TU Wien professor. No specific language certificate is listed for doctoral admission. Non-EU doctoral applicants use the same windows as master's applicants.
What if your bachelor's is not a perfect match?
The Dean of Academic Affairs checks whether your degree is equivalent. If content is missing but the gap is 30 ECTS or less, you can still be admitted with extra exams to pass during your studies. Above 30 ECTS, you are not admissible to that program, so choose a master's close to your bachelor's field. Read more in our Austria admission requirements guide.
Paper application only
TU Wien does not accept electronic applications. You pre-register online in TISS and then send the complete, legalised application by post or deliver it in person. Missing documents can cost you the semester, so check everything twice.

Applying from Afghanistan
Afghan citizens pay only the ÖH fee at TU Wien. However, TU Wien's admission information says Afghan documents need full diplomatic legalisation by the Austrian embassy plus a certified translation. The Austrian Embassy in Islamabad states that since 1 January 2013 it can no longer verify or legalise documents issued by Afghan authorities.
Ask before you post anything
Because these two official statements conflict, email TU Wien's admission office and ask in writing how they currently accept Afghan certificates. Keep the reply with your application. Our documents and legalisation guide explains the options.
Living in Vienna
